Super-obesity, childhood obesity, postpartum, and dieting in your 70s: what should differ for each group?

With herbal diet medicine, even the goal should differ depending on 'who is taking it.' A prescription that suits an adult in their 20s or 30s must not be used as is for a child, a senior, or a mother right after childbirth. This article covers what to look at more closely for each group.

Super-obesity

The more weight you carry, the more strain on the knee and lower back joints, sleep apnea, and abnormal blood pressure and blood sugar grow together. If you lose a lot quickly, muscle goes along with it and metabolism drops, making yo-yo more likely.

  • Divide into small segments — we split the goal into 3–5 kg units and build in a maintenance period for each segment.
  • Protect muscle — we check muscle mass with a body composition test every month.
  • Check accompanying risks — we check blood pressure, blood sugar, and joint condition together.

An actual record — A woman in her 20s, 170cm tall. In March 2024 she was 131.2kg (body fat 54.4%, BMI 45.4); after 14 months of stage-by-stage prescriptions and maintenance-stage care, in May 2025 she was 63.5kg (body fat 25.2%, BMI 21.6). −67.7kg, of which 82% (55.3kg) was body fat, and skeletal muscle mass stayed within the standard range. (This is an individual record and results vary from person to person.)

Children and teens (elementary school and up)

Dieting for a growing child has a different purpose than for adults. The aim is not to 'lose' weight but to have them gain less weight while their height grows, so the body shape evens out naturally. Childhood obesity can affect precocious puberty, fatty liver, and growth plates, so it is better to manage it early.

  • No starving — rather than cutting portions, we change snack, late-night eating, and sweet drink habits.
  • Not using the adult prescription as is — we adjust the herbs and dosage separately for age and weight.
  • Together with a guardian — family eating habits shape a child's weight. Consultations are held with a guardian.
  • Growth records — we record height, weight, and body composition together and watch the pace of growth.

Postpartum diet

After childbirth, recovery comes first. Overly aggressive weight loss easily leads to low energy, hair loss, and irregular periods.

  • We do not prescribe while breastfeeding. After you finish breastfeeding, we check your recovery and then start.
  • Swelling and energy — we look together at leftover swelling after childbirth and the sleep loss and fatigue from childcare.
  • Replenishing while slimming — if you need to replenish qi and blood, we consider GONG BI JIN YAK, which contains Gongjindan. GONG BI JIN YAK is a prescription whose research the head doctor began for his wife after she gave birth to twins.

In your 60s and 70s and older

As we age, added weight directly raises the risk of lower back and knee joint conditions and heart and brain vascular conditions. Dieting at this stage is not about 'getting slim' but 'protecting a body that can move.'

  • Check all the medication you take — please tell us about all the medicine you take together, such as blood pressure medicine, diabetes medicine, heart medicine, and anticoagulants.
  • Slowly and a little at a time — muscle loss leads to falls and low energy. We slow the pace of weight loss and protect muscle mass.
  • A prescription with less stimulation — we remove or reduce herbs that can affect heart rate and blood pressure and start from a low stage.
  • The goal is everyday life — the goal is to ease the strain on your joints and get back to walking, climbing stairs, and moving through your day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an elementary school student take herbal diet medicine?

Yes. But we do not use the adult prescription as is; we adjust the herbs and dosage separately for age and weight, and instead of starving we help correct snack and late-night eating habits. Consultations are held with a guardian.

Can my parents in their 70s take herbal diet medicine?

After checking all the medication they take, we start from a low stage with a prescription that has less stimulation. The aim is to slim down slowly while protecting muscle and to reduce the strain on joints and the heart and brain blood vessels.

When can I take herbal diet medicine after giving birth?

We do not prescribe while breastfeeding. After you finish breastfeeding, we check your recovery and start, and if you need to recover energy, we consider GONG BI JIN YAK.

Can I consult if I weigh over 100kg?

Yes. For super-obesity, a long-term plan divided into segments and muscle care matter even more. Miple Korean Medicine Clinic also has the InBody record of a client who lost 67.7kg over 14 months from 131.2kg.
